UK Cuts BBC Funding, Government Says to Save Network Finances
Mail on Sunday reported that the UK government would not be paying finances to the BBC for the next two years. The government said that they are freezing the viewer’s fee they are paying to watch the BBC. For the next two years, the users do not have to pay the fee to the broadcaster.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that the BBC’s funding needs to be reformed. As inflation is rising in the country, freezing the fee for the broadcaster would give some relief to consumers. The country will be expecting a 30-year high inflation rate by April 2020. Therefore, to give relief from a spike in the living costs in the country, the government planned to cut the funding to BBC.
However, experts say that with the competition to the privately funded news channels and streaming services, it would be a blow for BBC to survive due to financial cuts. Other services, like Netflix and Amazon Prime funded by consumers, BBC was funded by the government.
The DCMS (Digital, Culture, Media and Support) declined to give its reaction to the government move. Opposition parties stated that this move is political in the country.
